The Turn-of-the-20th Century snapshots of
the Blake & Clark Families

135 Maple Street was Adeline and Lucian Clark's home from 1910 until at least Lucian's death in 1940.
According to a 2019 real estate website, 135 Maple Street has 2,168 sq feet. It was built in 1910 - so Adeline and Lucian likely were the first owners - and as of 2019, it hadn't been remodeled since 1910. 2019 value: $2,002,722.00. In 1910 when Adeline & Lucian purchased the house, it would have cost them $75,768.00.

Photo of house on Maple Street from Brooklyn Public Library online photo collection - taken 1965.
The description with the photo:
"Facades of two two-story limestone row houses on Maple Street between Rogers Avenue and Bedford Avenue with portions of attached house on both sides and sidewalk in foreground."

125 - 145 Maple Street block.

The interior of the townhouses: on the left - from Adeline's 1910 or so photograph when the Clarks moved in; on the right - from a realtor's photograph taken in 2017. Except for the painted trim and walls, the front parlor is the same.

The view across the street from 135. On the left: Adeline's photo from their front parlor from 1911. On the right: The same view in the 2018 Google Street View.

E.L. Bishop and Sons were a well-known construction firm in late 19th century-early 20th century Brooklyn. The advertisement to the right was published in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in 1909 and describes the row houses being built, including the two-story houses found on Maple Street near Bedford Ave would include 135 Maple Street.
I've posted the photograph on the left in a couple places, but the builders' trailer is the focus this time. It's also the view near 135 Maple Street.

The link to information about E.L. Bishop & Sons' work as well as Eli Bishop's biography focuses on houses like Adeline & Lucian's 23 St. Francis Place house, which suggests both of the Clarks' houses were developed and built by the Bishop & Sons firm.

The photographs below of the Clark family are taken on the steps of Lucian and Adeline's first home at 23 St. Francis Place.

These photographs of 23 St. Francis Place help confirm the photographs of the Clarks are taken on the steps of Lucian and Adeline's home. According to contemporary real estate descriptions, it is a 3,240 sq ft home.

1939-1941 NYC Tax photograph. Note the next door neighbors' window awnings are the same as those seen in the photographs of the Clarks.
